What Is Powerball?
Powerball is currently played in 43 States, Washington D.C. and the US Virgin Islands. The Multi-State Lottery Association or MUSL, is a non-profit organization formed by an agreement with lotteries, and they coordinate the drawings.
The game uses a 5/59 (white balls) + 1/35 (Powerballs) matrix from which winning numbers are chosen.
When the format was changed on January 15, 2012, the minimum advertised amount for Powerball is $40 million paid in an annuity with the potential of nine-figure prizes. The annuities, should the winner take that option, are paid in 30 graduated installments. However, winners can also choose a cash option.
Each play costs $2, or $3 if a player chooses the Power Play option, Before the format change on January 15, 2012, the games cost $1 each, or $2 with Power Play. The official cutoff time for ticket sales is 10 pm ET, although some jurisdictions cut sales earlier. The drawings are usually held at the Florida Lottery’s high-tech studio in Tallahassee.
Powerball drawings are held Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
Can Powerball Tickets Be Purchased Online?
Eventhough some lotteries do sell TO RESIDENTS OF THEIR STATE via the Internet, tickets are generally not sold online A lottery can legally sell tickets on the Internet, but only to persons within its own state. Powerball tickets can only legally be purchased at a state lottery sales terminal in the lottery jurisdictions that sell the Powerball game. Do not participate in the purchase of lottery tickets being sold by mail or over the internet across state lines or the U.S. national border as this is illegal.
Can Non-Residents or Non-U.S. Citizens Play Powerball?
If you are not a U.S. citizen or a resident of the state, you may still play the game. You can be a visiting tourist. If purchase a Powerball ticket legally, you are allowed to play the game and collect prizes if you win. However, some states ask that winners must produce evidence of citizenship or a federal SSN, Lawmakers have currently not passed any legislation that would limit winning to U.S. citizens, and there are other ways that taxes can be held back for a winner who does not have a U.S. SSN.
